Sampling for a remodel
We sample only what your project will touch. Finishing a basement, for example, might mean the floor tile, the ceiling and the duct wrap above. When plans grow, the new areas are sampled before anyone reaches them.

Asbestos has no look or smell that gives it away, so we never guess from the doorway. Tell us what you plan to change, whether that is a basement, a furnace or the whole house, and we bring in an MDH-certified inspector to sample just those materials. An accredited lab then puts a written result on each one.
We test houses, townhomes and rentals in Apple Valley, Rosemount and Empire.

Before any structure comes down, MPCA wants it inspected by an MDH-certified inspector. Apple Valley then asks for a copy of that inspector’s report with the city demolition permit application.
We use labs accredited through NVLAP or AIHA, and their report lists each sample with its asbestos content. Anything with more than 1 percent counts as asbestos-containing under Minnesota law, so that is the first number we look for on the page.
After October 1988? MDH accepts an architect’s or contractor’s no-asbestos letter instead.
Minnesota has no blanket survey rule for home remodels.
If the company doing your remodel has employees, state worker rules make it get an asbestos survey by a qualified person before its crew does demolition or remodeling where asbestos may be present. That holds inside a private home too.
Public and commercial buildings need an inspection before renovation or demolition, at any age.
Apple Valley holds a demolition permit until the documents it asks for, the inspector’s report among them, are submitted and approved.
